Sight Word Memory Palace

Sight words (the, is, and, you, said) don't follow regular phonics rules, so they have to be memorized. The difference between this and a random flashcard app: it tracks which words your child actually knows, surfaces the ones they keep missing, and gives a recommended review order based on spaced repetition.

Tricky words to revisit
The recommended order shows the words you've missed most often first. Once a word is "known" 3 times in a row, it gets pushed to a longer interval. This is the same principle as popular flashcard apps, but stays on this device — nothing leaves your browser.
Parent notes

If a child misses the same word three times in a row, stop and switch to a different list. Frustration doesn't help long-term memory. Come back to the missed word tomorrow.

Sight words are most useful once a child can already sound out simple CVC words (cat, dog, run). If they're not there yet, focus on Tool 21 (CVC Slider) first.

About this site

About Little Explorers English

Little Explorers English is a small collection of free, browser-based English learning tools built for children roughly 3 to 8 years old (with adult help) and 6 to 9 (independently). It is run by a small team of parents, ESL teachers, and web developers who felt that most "kids English" websites offer the same tired flashcards and ABC songs without any real educational depth.

Why this site exists

We wanted tools that:

  • Explain why a word or sound is the way it is — like why b and p are made with the same mouth position but a different voice.
  • Show connections between words (like cat-hat-mat-bat being a rhyme family) instead of asking children to memorize one word at a time.
  • Give parents and teachers real guidance on how to use each tool — including the "what this won't do" notes.
  • Respect children's intelligence with content that doesn't talk down to them.

Methodology

The site follows a phonics-first approach, consistent with the conclusions of the U.S. National Reading Panel (2000) report on reading instruction. Tools emphasize:

  • Explicit letter-sound instruction (Tools 1, 24)
  • Blending and word families (Tools 3, 21)
  • High-frequency word recognition (Tool 2)
  • Vocabulary in real contexts (Tools 4, 9, 11, 12, 13)
  • Short, active sessions — most tools are designed for 10–20 minutes, not extended screen time.

What this site is NOT

  • It is not a curriculum replacement. It is a supplement to a real reading program, parent conversation, or class.
  • It is not a screen-time solution. Tools are best used for short, focused sessions alongside a caregiver.
  • It is not a passive viewing experience. Almost every tool requires a click, drag, or spoken response.
  • It does not collect personal information from children. See the Privacy Policy.

Limitations

  • Speech audio uses your browser's built-in voice, which varies by device and operating system. The voices are not professional recordings.
  • Some features (audio, local storage) require a modern browser. The site is tested on recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari.
  • The English used is general American; vocabulary and spelling may differ in British English.
  • This site is not affiliated with any school, district, or curriculum publisher.

How the site is funded

Little Explorers English is free to use. The site may show contextual advertising (such as Google AdSense) in clearly labelled slots. These ads keep the site running but are not tied to any tool's content. See the Privacy Policy for how advertising is handled.
